From Stargazers to Starships
(Stargazers)
-
A collection of about sixty linked files, forming a self-contained
course at the high school level on (1) elementary astronomy
(pre-telescope), (2) Newtonian mechanics (3) Spaceflight and spacecraft. The material
is presented in a historical framework with many side excursions
and incidental connections, with many outside links. Also contains a
9-section "Math refresher", a section for the guidance of teachers,
a template of a sundial with explanations, glossary and timeline.
It is an attempt to create a high-school curriculum
which makes as much use of space and spaceflight as
possible.

The "Journal of Astronomical History and Heritage" (JAH2) is a
research publication launched in 1998. This provides an alternative outlet
for those who previously published historical material in the "Quarterly
Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society" and in "Vistas in
Astronomy".

National Astronomy Week 1996
(NAW'96)
-
National Astronomy Week 1996 (21-28 September)
This is a celebration
of astronomy, organised by a committee of amateur and professional
astronomers. It does not take place regularly, but is timed
to mark astronomically significant events. The theme for NAW '96
was the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the planet
Neptune. The web site contains a lot of information about
NAW, including beginers guides to telescopes. Plus a most comprehensive
list of astronomical societies in the UK.

The Face of the Moon: Gallileo to Apollo, An Exhibit of Rare Books and Maps from the Collection of the Linda Hall Library
-
Welcome to: The Face of the Moon: Galileo to Apollo
An Exhibit of Rare Books and Maps from the Collection
of the Linda Hall Library
We have prepared an online
version of an exhibition catalog that was originally published in
1989. The catalog was written by William B. Ashworth, Jr
and it won the First Place Award in the annual
competition sponsored by the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section of
the Association of College and Research Libraries. Copies of the
printed catalog are still available.
For this online version, several
minor errors have been corrected; otherwise, it follows the format
of the printed version. However, the addition of the many
hypertext links makes it possible to browse the catalog in
an entirely new way. We hope you enjoy it.
