Protecting the Migration Habitat of the Giant Panda

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda BreedingThe protection of the giant pandas' migration habitat will be based upon the existing manually-bred pandas. More and deeper research will be conducted on the breeding and raising of giant pandas to increase the population of manually-bred giant pandas, enhance the surviving ability of pandas when they once go back to the wild.

The plan of protecting the migration habitat of the giant panda shall be chiefly executed by Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, which was built with the fund of the Ministry of Construction and the National Forestry Office in 1987. The center has biological Pandas' Playground at Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breedingcages for grown-up pandas, sub-grown-up pandas, panda cubs, red pandas and other rare animals, modeling the real wild environemt. The center also has first-rate open laboratories, research building and other facilities. Covering 35 hectares, the center will expand to 200 hectares. By the year 2000, 61 panda cubs had been born in 40 pregnancies and 32 survived in the base. At the same time, the base has finished over 60 related research projects, of which more than 40 have been given a national, ministrial, or provincial research prize. In 1995, the United Nations Environment Programme elected it to the rank of Global 500 Roll of Honor in 1995.

China Conservation and Research Center for Giant PandaAnother executive institute of the plan is the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Panda, which is located in the Wolong Natural Reserve of the National Forestry Office. The first and largest panda reserve in China, the population of wild pandas is 10% (about 100) of all in China; and the population of manually-bred giant pandas is 30% (44) of all in the world. From 1991 to 2000, 50 panda cubs had been born in Wolong research center in 34 pregnancies, and 33 survived. The Wolong Natural Reserve does not only take measures in protecting the wild pandas in the reserve, but also makes progress in the artificial reproduction and manual breeding of giant panda.
