Foshan pottery sculpture

Foshan pottery sculpture was particularly most famous in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. While pottery sculpture made in Shiwan with "fishing, wood cutting, farming and studying"are the representative works of Foshan pottery sculpture.

The moulds of human figures of Foshan pottery sculpture are very lively and vivid, as natural as the real. They pursue after artistic effect not only the body but also the spirits. There are figures in mythology and legend, folk novel, or figures in historical stories and common people. All are lifelike with different postures. Foshan pottery sculpture is often placed on the ridges of houses as delicate and magnificent ridge ornaments. Some are placed among the potted landscape of hill and rock as unique small landscape. The moulds commonly seen are domestic fowl and animals, wild birds and animals, some auspicious animals and lucky things also included.

Shiwan pottery sculpture in a shape of golden catMade in the Qing Dynasty, 12.5cm in height, 23.5cm in length, this sculpture is collected in Guangdong Museum. The cat is golden yellow from head to foot. There are yellow stripes exactly like tiger skin on the cat. The cat opens eyes widely and staring in the front nervously. It looks spying on a mouse hole. The cat is plain white without glaze, but the color is extraordinarily lifelike. It looks extremely lively and vivacious. The cat is itching for a try.

Shiwan white glazed pottery in a shape of lying duckMade in the Qing Dynasty, this pottery is 11.5cm in height, and 19cm in length. The duck is wholly white glazed. The lower part of its belly was inscribed with two Chinese characters of "huang bing" in regular script. The head and tail of duck crook together with long and flat duckbill resting on the apex of its wing. The duck looks like a naughty boy playing with people. The body and spirit both are lifelike. The shining feather and ellipse body will remind people of golden roast duck.
