When the wind and dew of autumn arrive, Yue Kiln is open and overwhelms the emerald of thousand mountains

Among all the celadon porcelains, production scale of Yue Kiln's celadon porcelain is the largest in quantity and the best in quality. Yue Kiln's celadon porcelain is famous for being warm and humid, simple but elegant. Some verses singing Yue Kiln's celadon also incardinated such kind of beauty, such as Lu Guimeng's (a well-known ancient poet of the Tang Dynast) description "When the wind and dew of autumn arrive, Yue Kiln is open and overwhelms the emerald of thousand mountains"Base of Yue Kiln's celadon porcelain is fine and smooth, clear and melodious when hit. The glaze is yellow or with yellow in blue and without crackles. The common decoration method is cutting vertical lines on the plain ground. Another method is cumulating flower and grass, portrait as well as fishes and beasts. The most often appeared vessels include bowl, plate, spittoon, canister and box. As to special vessels, there are porcelain ink-stone, portable kettle and porcelain round jar with small belly, especially the fashionable Yuou porcelain, which is unrolled lip, crimped and shallow bottom, topped flange and shallow belly. Superior quality celadon porcelains, called "Mi'se Porcelain", are for the use of royalty and the officials at court. Mi'se porcelain is fine in quality, and its glaze is green tint with sparkling luster, therefore, it is considered as best product of Yue Kiln's celadon porcelain.

Celadon Bear-shaped Lamp

Celadon Bear-shaped LampProduced in the Wu Empire of the Three Kingdoms, 9.5 cm caliber, collected in China History Museum. It takes the shape of beast, consisting of 3 parts: lamp, lamppost and bearing thereof. The lamp is with constrictive open, shape of earthen bowl, and 3 cord designs carved on external surface/wall. The lamppost is a baby bear seated in the center of bearing, with its front feet supporting the head, back feet constrictive and the head touching the lamp. The bearing is with folded edge and vertical wall as well as flat bottom. The baby bear wears woven designed clothes, like a lovely and tame pet. The lamp is celadon glazed. The glaze is earth yellow and the base is hoar. The whole vessel's sculpt, beautiful and applied, is vivid and novel with harmonious scale.

Celadon Lotus Style Cup and Sauce
Produced in the West Jin Dynasty, 19.5 in total height, 17.7 cm caliber, collected in China History Museum. The ball-shaped burner is plump and charming. Its upper part has three lines triangle holes while lower part is with an ellipse-shaped door and a bird button on top. The bird, perking and spreading its wings, is vivid and lifelike. Three bear feet are pasted under the bottom and bearing respectively. The bear stands vertically and bends forward to set off the civility and magnificence of the vessel. The surface of vessel is imprinted with texture and pearl-joint design. The burned is yellow glazed, and sculpt thereof is small and exquisite and processed finely as well as preciously.

 

Celadon Lotus Style Cup and Sauce

Celadon Lotus Style Cup and SauceProduced in the Five Dynasties (A.D. 907-960), 13.5cm in height, 13.9 caliber, collected in Suzhou City Museum. The glaze is thin and even, verdant, bright and smooth, making a sense of "verdancy of a thousand mountains". The vessel consists of 2 parts: Cup and Saucer. The cup, with open-entry and deep belly, is decorated with 3 layers embossed lotus paddles. The saucer takes the shape of lotus facing upward with 2 layers low relief carving lotus paddles. The ring foot is horn-shaped. The entry and foot are also decorated with lotus design. The carving blade is sharp, and the line is lively and flowing. The total sculpt is plump and lightsome like the blooming lotus. Emperor Qian Long (the 4th emperor of Qing Dynasty) praised the products of Yue Kiln: "Yue Kiln's Porcelain of the Tang Dynasty is very precious and rarely seen in the world."
