Dalai Lama the 6th - A Living God and Poet of Mamba People

A meeting room in Zhaqu village

The Mamba people of Moinyu district believe in Red Religion ardently. It was said that on one day in 1683, there appeared 7 suns in the sky in Yusong district of Moinyu. When all people were at a loss what to do, they learned a poor farmer's wife born a baby. He was the transmigration body of the 5th generation Dalai Lama - Cangyangjiacuo, who was the future 6th generation Dalai Lama. He had a miraculous life. He was also a talented poet of love poems. Because of this, he became a figure who was most discussed in the history of Tibet.

Since Dibasangjiejiacuo (an important assistant of Tibetan ruler) usurped power and decided everything by himself. As late as 14 years after the 5th generation Dalai Lama passed away, he asked the 6th generation Dalai Lama to ascend throne in the Potala Palace; from then on, the 6th generation Dalai Lama started his career as a statesman. But, 14 years of rural life made him an experienced person in human life. Since Mamba people were quite free in love affairs and young people's love usually was not affected by other factors. His love in life inspired his talents in writing poems. One of his poems reads: " I make an appointment with a girl and we will meet at a village of Moinyu. Only the parrots know this, please keep the secret."

At that time, Dibasanjiejiacuo's struggle with the Mongolia King, Lazang Han, came to the climax. Moreover, he did not let Cangyangjiacuo join in such struggles. So Cangyangjiacuo was only a religious leader in name. Because of this, he had more freedom to do other things. When he told his worries to others, no one could understand him at all. He visited teahouses and hotels. He hunted women and he wrote love poems. All kinds of reproaches arrived like storms. Lazang Han took this opportunity and presented a memorial to Emperor Kangxi of Qing Dynasty. He criticized Cangyangjiacuo's mistakes and said that his deeds meant he was not worth to be the Dalai Lama. He asked Emperor Kangxi to abolish Canyangjiacuo.

Ever since then, this Mamba religious leader and poet started an exile of 40 years. He left his footprints in Beijing, India, Nepal and Mongolia. Some said he passed away in Wutai Mountain; some others said he passed away in Alashan. He died at the age of 64.

I stand on top of Mount Potala
My mind shines with great splendor
I become a saint
I went north and north of Tibet
To release souls from purgatory

More than two centuries have passed, but the Mamba people did not forget this Spirit and lover. They cherish the memory of this living Buddha and poet through passing down Cangyangjiacuo's love songs. When I travel along Yumei mountain pass in the Great Canyon, I picked up a piece of cigarette paper. A love poem of Cangyangjiacuo was written on it. When I asked my porter about it, he told me it was written by a female teacher. He told me she was the only person who can write in Chinese there. From this, we can see how the once living Buddha's poems are influencing his offspring.
